BIO

Camilo A. Tobon is a surgeon and an ophthalmologist. He specializes in Retina and Vitreous Surgery and exercises his private practice in the city of Manizales, Colombia. Always passionate about ophthalmology, Camilo was concerned about the lack of a tool for the early detection of eye diseases in children in his country, which led him to research about innovative tools for visual screening. He created El Pirata Vigilante (The Watchful Pirate), a mobile app that can detect visual impairment in children as young as 3 years-old while they play on any electronic device. El Pirata Vigilante evaluates visual acuity from afar, up close and color vision of each eye in only 5 minutes. It also sends information and alerts in real time to the respective health and education institutions, preventing not only visual problems such as amblyopia (lazy eye), but also school desertion and poor performance in the classroom.
